On the 14th of February 2018, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida suffered a mass shooting which resulted in the deaths of 17 staff members and students and the injuring of several others. The assailant was identified as a former student of the school and confessed to being the perpetrator of the attack. The shooting at the school is the most deadly school shooting in the history of the United States, with more fatalities and injuries than the April 20, 1999 shooting at the Columbine High School. The shooting occurred at a time when public support for gun control was increasing after the Las Vegas, Nevada and the Sutherland Springs, Texas shootings in 2017.

Authors Year Title Purpose Description Recommendations and Conclusion
Alan Yuhas 2017 The right to bear arms: what does the second amendment really mean? A discussion of the second amendment of the United States Constitution. The second amendment provides citizens with the right to bear arms.

It states that the right to bear arms shall not be infringed on.

The second amendment only gives the right to bear arms in cases where it is justified for security purposes.

The right to bear arms is only provided on the basis of states protecting themselves from federal interference.

Jeff Daniels 2018 Definition of what’s actually an ‘assault weapon’ is a highly contentious issue A discussion of what is considered an assault weapon and regulations on assault rifle usage. An assault weapon of a rifle is a rapid-fire, magazine-fed weapon that is designed for military use. It is a shoulder-fired weapon that allows the shooter to select between semi-automatic, fully automatic, or three-shot-burst modes. The definition of what specifically constitutes a so-called “assault weapon” is a highly contentious issue and something that riles up some gun advocates.

Some gun control backers pushing for an assault weapons ban include the AR-15-style rifle used in recent mass shootings.

The firearms industry insists the AR-15-style rifles are technically neither assault weapons nor assault rifles.

Vernick, J. S., and Hepburn, L. M. 2003 State and federal gun laws. A discussion of the various gun laws in American states. The state of Arizona has very few restrictions on gun ownership and sales. One does not need a permit to purchase a handgun or rifle.

The state doesn’t require ownership registration. And you can carry a handgun, either concealed or openly, without a permit.
Bonnie Berkowitz, Denise Lu, and Chris Alcantara 2018 Mass shootings in the United States An evaluation of the past shootings in the United States. The Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting was the deadliest shooting as a result of the ‘assault rifle’ used. Shootings involving the use of short guns have lesser fatalities.
