“I am not your Perfect Mexican Daughter”

In “I am not your Perfect Mexican Daughter”, the protagonist, Julia, faces multiple complex challenges resulting from her rebellion and her complex relationship to her recently deceased sister, who was idealized by their parents.

Julia has to negotiate her greif over the death of Olga, who was always held up as an exemplar of being a perfect Mexican daughter, while both resisting her parents pressures to get her (Julia) to conform, and learning that her sister was actually a far more complex individual than she knew.

How does Julia negotiate her grief, her discoveries about Olga, her conflicts with her parents, and her own path of self-definition and self-discovery? Julia has a difficult disposition and is often at odds with others, and at the same time is focused on her own goals.
