Because of their geographical isolation, the peoples of the Far North – the Inuit, Yupik, and Inupiat all of whom used to be called “Eskimo” – is perhaps the least understood of North America’s indigenous people. At the same time, as the lecture has shown, they may be the most persistently caricatured and stereotyped. How do the readings and film for this week expand our understanding of the cultures of far northern North America, especially in relation to “Eskimo” stereotypes?
